Culham Trail at Eglinton Avenue, Salmon in Credit River
An historic town in Canada Streetsville Ontario is part of the city of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, located roughly between Eglinton Avenue (south) and roughly Britannia (north); eastern boundary is roughly the Credit river; west boundary is Erin Mills Parkway. In 2008, Streetsville celebrates its 150 birthday, including fireworks on Canada Day July 1 (details on my blog).
The David J. Culham Trail is named for a one-time, then sitting, City Of Mississauga council member for this area. The Culham Trail begins in Erindale Park, at Dundas Street West, just east of Mississauga Road, a few kilometres south of this viewpoint. The Trail continues north along the Credit River, except for a short portion that winds through the Village of Streetsville to the Brampton border. I took some of these pictures in September, when the salmon were running in the Credit River. 'No Fishing' signs are posted here, though fisherman can be seen from time to time, as they were this day, until trail walkers, indignant, shooed them away. (Find Ontario fishing regulations here). I've made Mississauga my home for many years, and much of the time I lived in the Streetsville area. I now live in Port Credit (to get a break from Winter in Canada snow!) Two very different communities, yet both are quite wonderful in their own right.

Culham Trail Footbridge over Credit River Below Eglinton Av The trail photo above was taken from a location in the centre of this photo. The concrete overpass here is where Eglinton crosses the river. To access the parking area here (also located at a point in the centre of this photo), from Mississauga Road, head east (towards Toronto) on Eglinton. As soon as you cross the bridge, turn right at the first road. This will take you down to the river valley, where there's parking for about eight cars. Keep an eye out for cyclists and walkers where the trail crosses the parking area. |
Credit River, looking north from Culham Trail footbridge I took this photo from the footbridge, shown above. From here, you are looking towards the Kraft Canada and ADM Milling co. Ltd., the last two of five original mills in this area. The Village of Streetsville hosts an annual Bread and Honey Festival the first weekend of June. Train tracks also pass overhead in this area, with GO Transit trains heading for the Streetsville Go Station just northwest of here. Freight trains servicing the mills can block street crossings for a half hour or more when cars are being shunted. |
Credit River, south of Eglinton Av near Croatian church This photo shows the view from the river bank, off the trail itself, looking west across the river towards the Church of Croatian Martyrs (4605 Mississauga Road) and its adjacent riverbank park. The water level is generally fairly low at this time of year, barring any recent heavy rains. The river itself is managed by the Credit Valley Conservation Authority. |
Maples along Erin Mills Parkway north of Erin MIlls Town Centre Every Fall, it's a waiting and watching game if you are hoping to catch the best of the changing colours. From Summer's greens to Autumn's glorious displays, just a few days of rain and wind can make all the difference. And so it was this year, which had promised to be one of the best in many such seasons. As I was driving along Erin Mills Parkway a kilometre or so west and parallel to the river, I happened to notice the wonderful colours of these woods south of Thomas. A few days of bad weather intervened, but on this day, though the sun was still flirting behind heavy clouds, I took some photos anyhow. |
The Reds in maple trees need sunlight To glow Though I used Fuji film (which so reliably captures the true colours), to really glow, the leaves need to be bathed in early morning or mid afternoon sunlight. This low-angle, intense sunlight takes a ho-hum pallette and sets it on fire. Ah well, I'll try again next Fall! |
Salmon Running in the Credit River Here's one of a half dozen shots of a salmon trying to negoitiate its way up the Credit River. Why I persist in trying to photograph moving fish in water is beyond me! (See the dolphin photo I took at Telegraph Cove, B.C.). I had been composing a photo of the river valley when I glanced down at the water near my feet. There were many dark shapes wriggling in the late afternoon shadows. With a start, I realized they were all salmon heading upstream.
