Carvers ~ Thailand travel pictures
Thailand wood, furniture, fruit, vegetable carving
Carvers in Thailand are part of a day excursion from Bangkok to the Floating Market, though you will see examples of Thai carving skills everywhere from hotel lobby floral displays, food garnishes and furniture pieces. Tours stop at various venues so visitors can admire the local arts, crafts and carvings, and see carvers in action. Wood carvings and carved furniture can be bought and shipped home, as did one friend in Toronto, who now has two massive and wonderfully carved chairs. Here are some pictures of the carvings. I was impressed with the quality and designs of their work, and wished I had taken more photos of the flower arrangements. From here, I went to the River Kwai, and Hellfire Pass.

Thailand Canal boat
From Bangkok, a half-day tour heads west, with stops at artisans stalls and factories, then takes in the Floating Market, where I took this picture, in the morning before returning to Bangkok. The full-day tours go to a park complex for lunch at the Rose Garden, then to an Ethnic Show at a large arena. This woman was paddling on a canal near the arena. |
Thai fruit carvers Near the Ethnic Show arena, we saw local fruits being carved. Floral and vegetable displays like these are common on buffet tables and hotel lobbies, etc. It was interesting to see how the craft is done, and being taught to Thai girls. Learn how to carve garnishes: |
Thai Flower Arranging Larger leaves (I am not sure if they were a type of palm or banana) were cut into smaller shapes and rolled into tiny flutes, or cone shapes.
The shaped leaves are used as garnishes on platters of food and as greenery in floral arrangements.
Vendors selling a variety of flower garlands with this style of leaf can be seen near temples and on the street. (These garlands are also used for weddings.) |
Ceramic Fruits Mimic the Real Ones
These fruits look so real that I had to touch them to be sure they were indeed ceramic! |
Thai Wood Carving Demonstration Another stop was at this furniture store and workshop, where a number of carvers worked away in a covered area next to the showroom. On a separate trip to this same spot, a friend purchased two large club chairs made entirely of wood, with this very detailed carving on the back and sides. (The chairs are very heavy. I could not raise one off the floor at all.) He said that he had been skeptical that these chairs would indeed be shipped to him in Canada, as he had arranged, but they arrived in great shape. |
Wood Carving Shop Near Bangkok All the work being done in this area appeared to be chiselling and cutting the designs, not actual furniture construction. |

Inside the showroom, there was an astonishing array of elaborately carved furniture, as well as this amazing piece. |
Carved Wood Picture A closer look at the intricate work, above. I remember noting that none of the items were cheap. In fact, some were quite costly, which reflects the great amount of work that's gone into making it. |
