Other Interests
While at Sheridan College, I got my first taste of web design, but it lay dormant for several years, until I volunteered to set up a web site for a then-new charity Starthrower Foundation.
After setting up the Starthrower Foundation site (though I continue as webmaster), I set up my own site, Snapshotjourneys.com, on which I continue to work. I find web site design and maintenance endlessly absorbing and challenging, and a lot of fun!
I also write my own travel blog ~ Snapshot-Travel-Blog -- as well as two blogs on a volunteer basis: Starthrower Foundation Updates from Haiti and Brueckner Rhododendron Gardens.
Evelyn Hannon at Journeywoman.com, a Toronto Canada-based website for travellers, was a fabulous support and mentor in travel and writing about travel. Hi! I am making a trip with 3 friends to Puerto Plata in 2 weeks and would like to make a day trip to the Haitian border while there.
Sounds like you had a great trip. Please email me the driver information for your excursion.
Also, we are renting a car for our stay. Do you advise driving unescorted? What information/documents do we need to cross the border?
Thanks! Larry

Hi Larry,
I went to Haiti from the DR via Turinter in Puerto Plata, and the last I heard, they had stopped doing tours into the country.
In Playa Dorada, I found a few tours leaving from there to go just into Haiti to an orphanage, but they were day trips only.
You may not need a visa beforehand, but there may be fees charged to cross; this changes all the time, so ask when you get to the DR.
As for having an escort on a self-drive, that is up to you. See http://www.snapshotjourneys.com/fortliberte.html page for more on this area, and note the comments on that page, as you may be able to get local info from the poster.
I know some people who've driven around the DR without any incidents, and others who have gotten into some bother.
It's like driving anywhere, I expect; you never know what will happen.
Good luck on your travels, and let me know how you make out.

Do you have written permission to be taking/posting pictures of this cemetary. I am from a Vancouver Island reserve and I have had to ask people to leave our reserve because their only purpose was to come onto the reserve and take pictures of our cemetary. We traditionally have many rules about even entering our cemetaries...I was just curious and needed to ask..I dont feel that a cemetary should be posted as a tourist site..

Fort Rupert Cemetery:
Hi Barb,
I took this picture from the street adjacent to the Fort Rupert cemetery in accordance with standard photo protocol:
If something is visible from a public street/ public vantage point, it is fair game.
Anyone can take pictures from public areas, but cannot go onto private lands to take photos of anything hidden from public view.
IE I can take a picture of a house from the street, but I cannot come into the yard, and peer into the window and snap a picture.
If the cemetery wishes complete privacy, then they would erect a fence to obscure markers.
I appreciate your view about travel site content, but this picture captures precisely what a visitor would see, or could have seen at the time, when taking a simple walk down a municipal street in Fort Rupert.
Thanks for taking the time to comment. I do appreciate your input.

Hi Karen,
I wanted to let you know that I told you that the owls in the park were Boreal Owls.
Unfortunately, that was incorrect.
Upon further inspection of the birds, they are Eastern Screech Owls. I thought you would like to make the necessary correction of your photo! :)
Cheers
Phyllis
