Credit River Saddington Park Salmon Fishing Mississauga Ontario
All afternoon, we could see salmon jumping in the Credit River here at Saddington Park, but not many of them were biting.
Fishermen kept changing lures in hopes of enticing them to bite, wtihout much luck.
The popular opinion was to go home for dinner, then try again after 7 p.m. that night.
Credit River Landing a Salmon at Saddington Park
So just before 7 p.m. I went back to Saddington Park, and spent some time chatting with fishermen.
Finally some success: This fisherman landed a good sized salmon (video at bottom of page).
This was the second salmon he landed within a half-hour.
"I'm using the same lure as everyone else," he said. "I'm just lucky."
Wild Chinook Salmon Caught at Saddington Park ~ Credit River at Lake Ontario
Another fisherman who was fishing closer to Lake Ontario (I purposely didn't photo his face) ID'd this salmon as a coho, and estimated the weight as 12 pounds.
[According to the John Kendell, president of the Credit River Anglers Assn, "The salmon you have noted as a coho is actually a wild chinook salmon." Cheers!]
It was getting dark at this point, as you might infer from the flash.
After I snapped this photo, this fisherman stepped down the rocks to the water's edge so he could release the salmon into the Credit River.
As he leaned over the water to let the fish go, the fiesty fish twisted and turned, making him lose his balance and do a nose plant into the water.
I admire his restraint in not uttering any bad language as he got out of the river, and took off his wet clothing, as far as decently possible :-)
Salmon Fishermen at Port Credit Mississauga Ontario
Earlier this same evening, I walked around the point of Saddington Park where if faces Lake Ontario.
The wind was blowing across Lake Ontario from the west, and the temperature noticeably cooler once you rounded the point.
From here, I walked back along the river, and counted 54 people fishing: 53 men and one woman!
I only counted fishermen who had a rod in hand. It was standing room only on the banks of the Credit!
There were about 6 small boats at the mouth of the Credit River, fishing.
Fisherwoman Catches Salmon on Credit River Mississauga
Late afternoon, when most of the salmon were not biting, this fisherwoman managed to hook a good sized salmon, that she kept.
She holds the rod steady while her fishing companion nets her salmon, then put back into the river to keep cool until they finished fishing for the day.
Video Fishermen Landing Salmon Credit River at Saddington Park
Just as it was getting dark, this fisherman landed his second large salmon of the evening and I was able to get a video and some still shots before the batteries died. He had a hand held scale to weigh his catch that he was taking home: His first salmon weighed in at 27 pounds, if memory serves, and this one he lands in the video weighed in at 17 pounds. See MNR guidelines or order a copy of the guide for eating fish caught in Lake Ontario and Credit River.
Atlantic Salmon -- Put it Back
"Atlantic salmon are out of season all year in the Credit River and must be released immediately if caught."
