Fast Food in Santiago Chile

McDonalds, Cafe Haiti, Billy Boys ~ Coffee, Snacks, Ice Cream

When you're exploring Centro and you want a snack or drink, stop in to one of the fast food places. Here are three of them, but there certainly are more. McDonalds is widely known around the world, but Cafe Haiti and Billy Boys, though widely known around Santiago, may be new names for international visitors. Here are a few pictures of the exterior so you know what to look for when walking around Santiago. I added a googlemap of this area at the bottom of the page.

I've found the  McDonalds in Santiago (and Montevideo Uruguay and San Jose Costa Rica, for that matter) to be a reliable spot to get good coffee and familiar food, albeit with a Chilean flair.

Even if you don't speak Spanish, you can look at the picture menu, and point :-)

But often McDonalds has staff on duty who speaks a bit of English.

Some outlets have windows open to the street, as shown in this photo, where you don't even have to enter to order a snack or coffee, etc. Many of them sell soft ice cream cones as well, feeding the Chilenos passion for ice cream.

And bonus for travelers: good washroom facilities.

Cafe Haiti is a chain of coffee shops in Santiago and area and a good spot to get good coffee.

They appear to be as ubiquitous as Starbucks in Seattle ;-)

You can take away your coffee or 'belly up to the bar' to down your espresso.

Billy Boys Bright Yellow Sign for Completos and Soft Drinks in Santiago Chile Bright yellow sign for Billy Boys fast food service in Santiago Chile.

Billy Boys is a local (not international) chain offering a menu similar to McDonalds but with its own foods and service methods.

i'd gone in to check it out late one afternoon, and sat myself down on one of the stools at the counter.

I sat there for some long minutes, until some kind customer suggested I go to the order and payment booth (lower right just inside door in the photo).

After I ordered and paid for my meal, I was given a chit, and in a few minutes, I had my drink and completo (Chilean hot dog). It was good, but then I really like 'completos! Think 'complete' = 'the works' for the toppings you add.

Domino and Burger King Santiago Chile Domino and Burger KIng restaurants in downtown Santiago.

Domino chef talks with passerby outside the restaurant on this pedestrian mall just north of Av Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins.

Domino also serves completos, and has a number of locations.

Next door, a Burger King window sign advertises BK Ofertas (specials)  for $1,690 CLP (about $3.60 USD).

Look, too, for Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.

There are several banks in this area, with ATMs that accept international debit cards. Look for Redbank. I was able to use Canadian bank Scotiabank.

It's easier to pay for small items in Chilean pesos.

Google Map of this area in Downtown Santiago:

Here is a map to give you a bit of orientation for this area.

A on this map is the Hotel Montecarlo, where I stayed. This map shows a walking route to the west, which I did some days, or when I was going to Plaza De Armas area (C on this map).  Most times I came out of the hotel and turned left, walked south a few blocks to Bernardo O'Higgins.

I couldn't make out the address for the McDonalds on my receipts, so I chose a landmark (B on the map) on Avenue Libertador Bernardo O'Higgins, the main street in this area.  There are a several McDonalds, Billy Boys and Cafe Haitis in this area. Many of the streets on the north (top side) of Bernardo O'Higgins are pedestrian traffic only, but do watch for the ones that have vehicles crossing.

The large green area is Cerro Santa Lucia park. It's really high, so it's faster to walk around it than climb a few hundred feet!
