Enroute from Puerto Plata, the day tour stopped at this pottery. I had been here before, but changes had been made. The pottery making demonstration was even more interesting.

I took this picture of the sign so I'd know the correct name. It's located on the main highway to Santiago. Nice gift shop, too!

Anywhere you go in the Puerto Plato-Santiago area, you will find shops selling pottery and ceramics.

'La Feria' means 'Fair' in Spanish, in the sense of Fall Fair in the U.S. or Canada.

The shops also sell Dominican and Haiti arts and crafts, including wood carvings.

Though quite lovely and inexpensive, larger ceramic pieces are difficult to carry home.

However, if I ever buy a small home here, I know where to come for all manner of pots and planters.

Inside the shop, there's a decent selection of smaller pieces that would make nice souvenirs.

Fridge magnets always go over well, or bottle stoppers, and they are so easy to tuck into a suitcase.

These pictures are from a day trip in August. I also came in January, during the north coast rainy season.

Dominican Potter Shaping Pots by Hand  ~ Pottery Tour Stop

On the first trip, this pottery work space was part of the tour.

This young woman was one of a number of potters working in a covered area behind the gift shop.

Large packages of raw clay and kilns took up the rest of the space.

On a later trip, the tour took in a new building with more details on how the clay was cut and  prepared.

Smaller Pieces of Dominican Pottery Make Good Souvenirs Dominican republic Pottery Souvenirs for sale on exterior walls and roof as well as inside the shop.

The exterior becomes a gallery displaying finished pieces.

This quiet stop is a nice way to wind down the long and busy day.

From here, the road back to Puerto Plata wound down the mountains, past the end-of-day roadside stands where vendors sold locally-made baseball-size white cheese.

The order of day trip stops varies from season to season, and by tour operator, and if the tour is running late or not, and how many other tours are scheduled  for the various stops that day.

But most tours will include stops in Santiago at the monument and a cigar factory on the way to the waterfalls, and some go on to Santo Cerro and the church.
