St Jacobs Ontario ~ Travel Canada Pictures

Ontario Community Farmers Market, West Montrose Covered Bridge

St Jacobs Ontario community is a popular day trip from Toronto, Hamilton, Mississauga, Ontario. We first drove from Guelph north to Elora (googlemap) then southwest from Elora to St Jacobs (googlemap) via West Montrose covered bridge.

This Ontario Community's village shops are about 3 km (1.5 miles) from the south end Farmers Market. With a large Mennonite community producing tasty foods, garden produce and the famous Mennonite quilts, St Jacobs offers lots of shopping ops!  Here are some pictures of the village of St Jacobs and the covered bridge.

Artisticland Shop - St Jacobs Ontario

Artisticland is typical of the cute and quirky shops that make St Jacobs village such a popular destination for locals and tourists alike.

This village shopping area is at the north end of the community, and well signed if driving from the south on King Street.

The village offers galleries and handmade local crafts, dress shops and restaurants.

The buildings in St Jacobs village show their heritage, including the Visitor Centre - with Telling the Mennonite Story.

Shops are open all year round as is The Farmers Market, but only on Thursdays and Saturdays (also mid-June to August 31 on Tuesdays).

Keep an eye out for horse and buggies, the Old Order Mennonite transport of choice.

With the Farmers Market closed on Sundays, St Jacobs village streets are busy with shoppers and day trippers.

Special buys, other than the handmade quilts, are local solid wood furniture, and maple syrup.

St Jacobs is just south of Elmira, home to world's largest maple syrup festival. See Canada Maple Syrup page.

This model train tracks indoors and out at one of the shops along the main street in St Jacobs.

St Jacobs visitor brochure gives sample driving times from various areas:

From Buffalo -- 2 hours

From London -- 1 hour

FromToronto -- 1.25 hours

Driving time as always will depend factors such as route, traffic, time of day and road construction, but really, a day trip to St Jacobs is fairly easy.

This lovely classic car was parked on the main street (King Street) in St Jacobs.

Many of the buildings in the village are restored 19c with cute storefronts that are typical of many Ontario communties.

Kleinburg is one such cute and historical village, Niagara on the Lake and Elora are two more that come to mind, as does the older section of Guelph.

Bubbles fill the air above patio - St JacobsSt Jacobs shop main street Ontario community has a bubble making machine on patio.

Down the street from the model train exhibit, a bubble machine on this patio sent clouds of bubble floating on the breeze.

Bubbles are a nice way to stand out from all the shops clamouring for visitors' attention, especially for those selling good things to eat.

North of St Jacobs you'll find this historic covered bridge (see(googlemap for location).

There is linited parking nearby, and judging from the many No Trespassing No Parking signs in this area, local residents are heartily sick of finding their drives blocked with bridge visitors.

This bridge across the Grand River dates from 1881, and is one of the few remaining covered bridges in Ontario.

Directly opposite one end of the covered bridge stand these signs.

I noticed the Smart Car parked at a home here was labeled Faith-FM, a non-profit south Ontario Christian radio station.

Bridgekeepers is a local non profit residents group dedicated to preserving the bridge and keeping this area gravel pit free.

In the picture on the sign, in the picture of the sign (still with me?) you can see a red area to the left middle.

(The red area at top is the bridge itself.)

The blue grey mark to the left of the red is the Grand River. What's not easy to see in this image is a larger area outlined in yellow.

Apparently, a company called Capital Paving has applied to locate a massive gravel pit in this area.

Bridgekeepers (http://www.bridgekeepers.ca/)  do not think this is a good idea. Nor, would I guess, would any reasonable person want to see this pastoral, idyllic countryside awash in dust, heavy equipment and much other noisy machinery.

Hard to fathom a gravel company wanting to set up shop in this heritage area of the province.

And so what began as a Sunday day trip to St Jacobs via Elora ended with an eye opening experience.

And really, that's what travel is all about, isn't it? Expanding horizons and discovery.
