Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb ~ Australia Travel
Things to do in Sydney Australia
Climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the coolest things to do in Sydney, Australia!
I climbed the Bridge on one of my first trips to Sydney more than 10 years ago, when there was just one climb that cost about $98.
Climbers then and now have to first take a breathalyzer test, change into a special climbing suit, and go through an orientation before setting out. I really enjoyed this climb, but once was enough.
Over the years, Bridge Climb has grown. These days, there's a choice of Climbs: The Express Climb takes about 2.5 hours round trip, in groups of 12; The Discovery Climb and the original Bridge Climb take about 3.5 hours round trip in groups of 14.
Prices for adults ranged from $198 AUD to $298 AUD, depending on day of the week, time of year and time of day. Have a look and see if this is something you'd like to do on a trip to Sydney!
Sydney Harbour Bridge a Climb-able Landmark in Australia
Here's a picture of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, seen from Circular Quay (pronounced KEY), the ferry, train and bus station in the heart of Sydney.
Note the gray towers anchoring the left (south) end of the bridge:
The tower in front (the east tower) is also climb-able, with about 200 stairs leading from the bridge surface to a lookout near the top.
If you decide not to climb to the top of the Harbour Bridge, you can climb this tower. The views are also really good, and you can take pictures.
On a Bridge climb tour, all personal effects except for eye glasses are left in a locker. Glasses are attached to you with a cord around your neck.
A professional photoghrapher takes souvenir photos of the group and each member at the top, and the price is included in your ticket.

Close Up Look at the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Bridge-Climbing Group

Note the little figures on the steel span at the right middle of the picture. This is a group of climbers.
Climbers and tour leaders are attached by a kind of belt that is connected to a wire running along the path and ladders on the bridge and walkways. The group walks in single file.
For most of the climb, you are anchored to the bridge structure by this sort of harness.

Climbers Nearing the Top Center of the Sydney Harbour Bridge
A closer look at this group of Climbers on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Afraid of heights? I'm not particularly fond of them either.
But oddly enough, this bridge climb looks scarier from the ground than it did from the top.
The bridge structure above the roadway is really very wide, and covered with a solid 'floor'.
The only time I felt I was really 'up in the air' was on the elevated walkway from the Bridge Climb office area to the start of the climb at the bridge itself.
