Resort Areas Dominican Republic
Windsurf, Whale Watch, Beach, Golf
The Dominican Republic is one of the most popular of the Caribbean islands destinations, but it can be confusing trying to decide on Cabarete for windsurfing beaches or Punta Cana (arguably the best beaches for a romantic holiday or honeymoon.
How to Choose? Consider your flying times to from the Dominican Republic, as they can vary up to several hours in total travel time depending on your point of origin.
From Toronto, flights to Dominican often land first in the north - Puerto Plata, Santiago, etc. then drop off and pick up passengers before continuing south to Punta Cana, Santo Domingo, etc.
The same routing might happen on the return flight. If time is at a premium, then choose direct, nonstop flights where possible.
What do you want to do? Decide what you'd like to do in the Dominican: Some resorts are famous for golf like Cap Cana, some for mountain treks and rafting tours, some for proximity to art colonies and markets. What a difference an N makes :-) Make sure you are on the right island!
1. Cabarete (north coast)
Stay and play near Cabarete - the best windsurfing beach, on the north middle coast of the island. Amber sands give it its name.
2. Puerto Plata (north coast)
Be part of Dominican culture with lots of things to see and do at Puerto Plata! It's a real city, an old, historic city, not a resort. People actually live and work here at non-tourist jobs.
3. Sosua (north coast)
The best of both -- a fabulous windsurfing beach in a small town with a great social life.
4. Samana Peninsula (northeast coast)
A new highway will give faster access from the south / southeast resorts to this part of the DR! Samana is famous for whale watching tours (January15-March 15) near hotels on the Samana Peninsula.
5. Punta Cana (southeast coast)
Romantic honeymoon spot or romantic getaways. Beaches in this area are photographed for almost all tourism brochures - white sand for miles!
6. La Romana (south coast)
Tour the historic capital, Santo Domingo, and snorkel near offshore islands, and explore the amazing Altos de Chevon artists' colony.
7. Things to do in the Dominican Republic
The Dominican Republic is a popular golf destination.
Reminder: hurricane season in the Caribbean runs June 1 to November 30, the same as the hurricane season in the eastern U.S.A. Last minute travel deals during this time can be a bargain, but check the National Hurricane Center to see current and projected conditions.
