Waterside Inn Breakwater Restaurant
Fine dining in Port Credit, near the lake in Mississauga
The Waterside Inn Breakwater Restaurant is one of Mississauga's top fine dining restaurants. Its romantic location in Port Credit -- just steps from Lake Ontario, the marinas and Waterfront Trail -- makes it hard to say No to an after dinner stroll after a fabulous meal.

Breakwater Restaurant's Canada-born, Holland-raised executive chef, Dirk Noort, leads his talented team to create the innovative, seasonal menus that delight its clientele, and lend it the distinction of being the only restaurant in Mississauga awarded the prestigious CAA/AAA Four Diamond status. As well, Breakwater is the only restaurant in Mississauga to have a 3.5 star rating from Toronto Life.
Chef Noort completed his formal training in The Netherlands, including a stint with one of that country's most celebrated chefs. He returned to Canada to hone his craft at some of Toronto's finest kitchens before joining the Waterside Inn six years ago.
Conferences, Weddings, Banquets
As well as overseeing the 80-seat Breakwater Restaurant with its 40-seat seasonal patio, and room service for the hotel, Noort also handles weddings, private parties and conferences in the 5,000 square foot banquet facilities that accommodate up to 300 guests. "We do corporate events, weddings, banquets and social parties, like Christmas and holiday parties,' says Noort.
With such a broad demographic to consider, which also including the hotel's long-stay guests, local business people and regular festival goers, the hotel and restaurant collaborate closely on menus. "Our menu is more of a team effort" Noort says. "The menu selection is classical French, featuring local, seasonal produce."
Lighter fare . . .
Evolving food and dietary preferences are also a factor. "People like lighter foods, so we don't use heavy cream sauces," he says. "We use vegetable-based sauces. More and more people are health conscious, so we accommodate special diets. As well, with the restaurant serving the hotel guests, we select dishes that appeal to a broad range of tastes."
Great wines
For the fifth year in a row, the Breakwater Restaurant received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence for its comprehensive list. Wine Spectator reviews wine lists from over 10,000 restaurants world wide. In 2005, only 51 restaurants in Ontario were so honoured.
Brunch On Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Breakwater Restaurant serves brunch from an a la carte menu offering choices such as a traditional western style breakfast, or Atlantic smoked salmon with a light dill sauce, two poached eggs and toasted pumpernickel, and the perennial favourite, Eggs Benedict. For a sweeter treat, there are buttermilk pancakes with maple syrup and fresh berry compote, and Belgian Waffles served with crème anglaise and fresh strawberry compote.
Continental palates might opt for the fresh baked croissant with havarti cheese, black forest ham and herb-spiced scrambled eggs, while heartier appetites are tempted with Beef Tenderloin Strips, a ragout of beef tenderloin strips, bell peppers, roasted onions, potatoes and two eggs any style.
Dinners include imaginative starters, and mains with a selection of seafood and fish, pasta, risottos and the popular crab cakes, served with corn gazpacho and watercress salad. With the menu changing seasonally, there's always something new, like the Trio of Farm Raised Organic Pork with Tomato Ginger Jam, Lentils du Pay and Baby Spinach, which this month is Chef Noort's featured recipe.
Monthly As well, says Noort, "Every month, we have a new prixe fixe menu, with an appetizer, main and dessert. One month, it had a Latin American focus, and another month, a French focus. We offer fine dining with a focus on affordable value," he says. "Fine dining prices don't have to be high."
Breakwater is open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Meals are served in the elegant high-ceilinged dining room flooded with natural daylight. Tall windows line three walls; the fourth opens to the equally elegant hotel lobby.
The Waterside Inn and the Breakwater Restaurant join the Port Credit community in welcoming visitors and locals alike to come and take part in its popular summertime festivals, boat shows, boat races and fishing derbies, to wander this section of the Waterfront Trail and generally just enjoy this city's slice of lakefront magic.
